Action Alert: Support 2009 Oregon House Bill 2186

The Oregon Conservation Network (OCN) urges us to contact our legislators in support of H.B. 2186, to strengthen what Oregon can do to reduce the state's contributions to global warming. Such action is congruent with our State Platform legislative agenda.

Read the bill at H.B. 2186.

According to the OCN, the Bill would allow strategies such as:

  • Lowering the carbon intensity of Oregon's transportation fuel by setting a Low Carbon Fuel Standard which would take into account greenhouse gas emissions from the production, distribution and combustion of fuel. This action would complement Oregon's renewable fuels standard and help fuel distributors more efficiently meet their obligations under a regional cap-and-trade program.
  • Decreasing wasteful fuel use from a variety of large commercial engines. Complementary measures, such as reducing idling and retrofitting vehicles to make them more aerodynamic, could improve fuel efficiency, save fuel costs, and reduce greenhouse gases for sectors such as heavyduty diesel trucks and commercial ships while at port.
  • Many commercial products (such as refrigerants) contain high potency global warming gases. This bill gives the Environmental Quality Commission authority to restrict these high greenhouse gas products, when safe, cost-effective alternatives are available.
